Transfiguration Invocation

God of the high and low, we come before you this day seeking your Holy presence. We come to sing praises, pray petitions, and listen to the Word at your holy mountain. We come to experience metamorphosis, to be changed into your people. Change us in this hour so we might speak your Spirit of hope and grace to the world. We pray this in the name of Christ, AMEN.

CTW: from many

For many reasons

from many places

carrying wrongs and rights

some unsure

some very certain

each with a story

we are called

to be loved and to love

to see and be seen

to be made and re-made,

perspective shifted

spirits moved

bodies in motion

to be transformed into the body of Christ,

ready to help God transform the world.

CTW: we come…

One:  We come into this place offering our praise and seeking God’s path.

All:  We come carrying our doubts and fears, our wrongs and rights.

One:  We come to hear God’s word in song and in silence, in preaching and in prayer,
for we long to be re-created in Christ’s likeness.

All:  We come to worship, trusting that the Spirit will transform us and transform the world,
until the Kingdom of God is come on earth.

prayer of dedication: from smallest to largest

Receive the gifts we offer, O God.
Receive the gift of our lives – from the smallest to the largest.
Bless them all to your transforming work in the world. Amen.

confession: change

One:      Holy God, you call us to change our hearts and lives, to return to you.

All:      So often we like the way things are,
and we aren’t sure what changing our way
and following you would mean.

One:      You promise new life for all,

All:      but sometimes we decide who is good and who is bad,
closing off your love for ourselves and others.

One:      You call us to seek your heart,
to allow ourselves to be born anew in your Spirit.

All:      So often we live in the literal meaning of your words,
rather than letting the spirit of your word live in us.
Come and dwell within us,
and transform us from the inside out. Amen.

CTW: come into God’s presence

One:      Come into God’s presence with gladness!
All:      The Spirit brings light into our darkness,
hope to our sadness, joy to our mourning.

One:       Come into God’s presence with singing!
All:      Christ’s love brings faith to our doubt,
promise to our uncertainty.

One:      Come into God’s presence with joy!
All:      We come, seeking God’s new way of life.

confession: ready, willing, and able?

God of our renewed lives,
we talk about being better people…
doing things differently…
living more disciplined lives;
but we always talk about doing it tomorrow…
or next week…
or after the beginning of the new year.
Meanwhile, your Spirit surrounds us…
and we swat you away like a pesky fly…
because we don’t have the time, or the energy,
to be transformed.
So lead us to a quiet place of readiness…
and inspire, in us, a willing attitude…
so that we may be able to welcome your newness…
even now…as we offer our silent confessions…
