Prayer for Illumination: Freshly Baked Bread

Holy Spirit, lift these words from the pages of scripture like the aroma of freshly baked bread. Help us to hunger for these words, to be fed by your grace, and to share what you offer with all of your children on this earth. Amen.

Submitted by Rev. Lucus Levy Keppel, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Bixby, Okla.

Illumination: nothing but your will

God of love, through these words,
let your Holy Spirit teach us to love you completely.
Let our heart desire nothing but your will.
Let our soul feel nothing but your joy.
Let our mind know nothing but your truth.
Let our strength serve nothing but your peace.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

prayer: for the start of worship

Holy God,
your love reaches the heavens
and your faithfulness to the clouds.
As we are gathered to proclaim this grace,
send your Spirit into this holy place
that we might not go forth unchanged
to live as we once did.
Stir within us an utterance of wisdom and wonder.
Fill our lungs with a breath of your peace.
Manifest in us your servants before you
the courage we need to love and to serve you.
Gather us here and send us all forward
to follow the Christ who forever leads onward.

illumination: a glimpse of joyous life

Most Holy Mystery,
open our eyes, our ears, and our hearts
as your scripture is read and your Word proclaimed,
that we might gain a glimpse of your joyous life
and join the dance of Father, Spirit, and Son
now and always.
Amen.

Easter prayer of illumination: speak to us

Speak to us, Risen Christ, along our road:
explain the Scriptures,
break open the bread of life,
and set our hearts on fire with your love.
Amen.

prayer of illumination for Christmastide

submitted by Rev. Andy James, First Presbyterian Church, Whitestone, New York

God of light,
you have revealed your very self to us in your son Jesus Christ,
your one Word made flesh, who lived among us, full of grace and truth.
Open us to your revelation once again,
that in the words of your holy scripture
we might know your presence and follow in your light always.

Amen.

illumination: either way

God of newness,
we want to be ready…
we want to make room for you…
we want our lives to be changed by your advent.
So speak to us in our busy-ness and our quietness…
our uneven-ness and our level-ness…
our roughness and our smoothness…
so that, either way, your glory might be revealed to us.
Amen.

illumination: light

Holy God,
At times, we feel as if we’re completely in the dark.
We don’t recognize that your light is always around us,
Until we realize that it’s not that we’re standing in the dark…
It’s that our eyes are shut tight…
And our hands are placed firmly and completely over them.
So give us the courage to remove our hands from our face,
And to open our eyes…
So that we may see clearly, live fully, and serve freely…
Amen.

illumination: as if we are ready…

Submitted by Rev. Scott Cervas, Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church

Holy God,
speak to us, as if we are ready to listen;
show us, as if we are ready to see;
and send us, as if we are ready to go and be and do.
Amen.
